Lumisens DO2 Sensors

Lumisens Optical Dissolved Oxygen sensor


The Lumisens  sensor is developed for mini bioreactor use. The smart sensor design separates the electronics from the glass sensor part guaranteeing a long sensor life with repeated sterilizations. The electronics is positioned in place on the sensor part by magnets to guarantee reproducible positioning and good measurements.

Unlike classical polarographic dissolved oxygen sensors the optical measurement does not need polarization and is instantly ready for use.

The Lumisens Dissolved Oxygen sensors are specifically designed for fermentation and cell culture application and designed to withstand repeated sterilizations without failure.

The Lumisens Optical dO2 Sensor performs measurements based on the interaction between oxygen and so called REDFLASH indicators.

The Lumisens Optical dO2 Sensor has a sensor tip with immobilized REDFLASH indicators. These indicators are excitable with orange-red light (wavelength: 610 . .630 nm) and show an oxygen-dependent luminescence in the near infrared (NIR, 760 . . 790 nm).

There is an inverse relation between oxygen concentration and the amount of emitted light, which is called quenching effect. The interaction between the REDFLASH indicator and oxygen disables exciting of the indicator molecules and therefore decreases luminescence in a proportional manner. See image below.


The measurement principle, however, is not based on the intensity of the emitted light, but on the phase shift between excitation and emission which is directly related to the partial pressure of oxygen.

The REDFLASH technology is characterized by high precision and reliability, low cross-sensitivity and fast response. The red light excitation significantly reduces interferences caused by auto-fluorescence and reduces stress in biological systems.

The luminescence brightness of the REDFLASH indicators is very high. As a result, the duration of the red flash for a single oxygen measurement can be reduced to approx. 10 ms, significantly decreasing the light dose exposed to the measuring setup. Also, due to the excellent luminescence brightness of the REDFLASH indicator, the actual sensor matrix is much thinner, leading to fast response time of the sensor.
